The most common autoimmune liver diseases are autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) and primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC). When a patient is thought to have autoimmune liver disease, an autoimmune liver disease panel is applied.
Usually, the autoimmune liver disease panel includes tests for liver kidney microsome antibodies (eg., LKM-1 antibodies), antimitochondrial antibodies (AMA), antinuclear antibodies (ANA), and anti-smooth muscle antibodies (ASMA).
Sometimes the panel may also include other tests. For example, often immune protein levels in the blood are also checked.
